Fuse Monitoring in Large-Scale Solar Power Plants

Context
Protecting photovoltaic (PV) cables and modules in utility-scale solar plants is critical to operational efficiency and safety. Fuses are essential components that protect electrical circuits; however, when they blow, they disconnect their respective circuit and reduce the plant's power generation.
Monitoring and identifying blown fuses across an environment with hundreds or thousands of units can be exhausting and error-prone. This case study illustrates how implementing Delfos generated savings of approximately 0.27 MWh/day, equivalent to R$ 1,620/month for the company.
Implemented Solution
Delfos provided an integrated, real-time monitoring solution using advanced analytics and data visualization to quickly identify blown fuses.
Solution Features:
Real-Time Monitoring: The Delfos platform enables access to real-time data and visualization regarding the health and condition of solar assets.
Performance Heatmap: Through a performance heatmap, the maintenance team can clearly and intuitively visualize which solar panel strings are affected by blown fuses.
Advanced Analytics: Using advanced data analysis algorithms, Delfos identified an underperforming inverter caused by four strings with blown fuses (strings #1 through #4).
Figure 1: With Delfos monitoring, an underperforming inverter was identified due to four strings with blown fuses.
Solution Benefits
Energy Loss Reduction
Prompt identification of blown fuses resulted in energy savings of approximately 0.27 MWh/day, which equates to R$ 1,620/month on a clear sky day. Depending on string and inverter characteristics, these savings could be even higher.
Operational Efficiency Boost
By automating monitoring and offering an intuitive view of fuse conditions, the maintenance team can target their efforts more efficiently—reducing downtime and maximizing asset availability.
Informed & Agile Decision-Making
The platform delivered real-time data and advanced analytics, empowering the maintenance team to make swift, precise decisions, thereby enhancing asset management and fault response.
Results
The use of the Delfos real-time monitoring platform proved to be an effective solution to the challenges of managing fuses in a utility-scale solar plant. By rapidly identifying blown fuses and streamlining maintenance actions, the plant successfully reduced energy losses, boosted operational efficiency, and improved decision-making.
